Everyone did a double as they saw Michael Jordan walking into the unveiling of his signature sneaker. MJ had the Retro Air Jordan 2009 (2K9) in his hand, while the crowd locked eyes on the new release. The room was stuck on stupid for several minutes before they realized the shoe was in hand. Later after the release, Michael Jordan posed with native Chicagoan, Jason Mayden. Michael Jordan did not want to down play the importance of #23 to his legacy and Brand Jordan’s legacy, the numbering of Air Jordans ended with the Air Jordan XX3.
To come up with the Air Jordan 2009, Jason Mayden looked to the sport of Fencing for inspiration. In a session between Michael Jordan and Jason Mayden, both agree that the art of Fencing can be compared to the battle on the court where both types of athletes require quick moves, quick attacks and quick defense to win. Inspired by MJ’s defensive play, the 2009 takes hints from the sport of fencing, which can be seen along the upper’s pleated panels and wire mesh ventilation. Along the heel, the 2009 introduces Articulated Propulsion Technology, or APT, which was inspired by elements of prosthetic running technology that Paralympians such as Jordan Brand athlete April Holmes use in competition. The APT energy return system aims to offer support and explosive feedback for an athlete during play with the help of two engineered platforms along the outsole that help to give a propelling sensation. Coupled with the shoe’s heel and forefoot Zoom Air units, there is also an extra heel Zoom Air unit embedded in the insole for added cushioning.
